Story time!
Ramon Mercader was the worst (successful) assassin. The day Trotsky was killed, he kept mentioning how great he felt. Perhaps all those sleeping pills were finally paying off. So there he was, feeling great and feeding his rabbits, when Ramon Mercader arrived. The guards weren’t concerned with him, he came often. They just knew him as Sylvia’s boyfriend, as he came often to pick her up. Earlier he told Trotsky and his wife he would never wear a hat or a jacket, regardless of weather. So he trots on in wearing a hat and awkwardly holding a jacket (this is Mexico in August) and naturally Natalia Sedova sees something is up. He seems pretty sketch, but she’s not sure. Trotsky doesn’t notice much and excitedly shows him his rabbits, then finishes up feeding them and takes Mercader to his office, where he reads over an article he brought him. Meanwhile Mercader fumbled with the jacket he said he would never wear, in which he carried a revolver, dagger, and ice pick. Mercader didn’t want to use the revolver, hoping to avoid the noise so he could quickly get out front to his mom in the getaway ride, and was faced with the decision: dagger, ice pick? Dagger, ice pick? Ice pick, he hastily chose! Mercader was so nervous that as he went to stab the preoccupied Trotsky, shaking and with his eyes closed he used the blunt end of the ice pick, and rather than killing him instantly, Trotsky screams and fights back, keeping him long enough that the guards came and caught him. They took a while to call an ambulance (they didn’t trust hospitals after their son was killed in one) and Trotsky died the next day after an attempt at surgery to save him.
Mercader was in a Mexican prison for 20 years, after which he escaped through east Germany. In the USSR he was given the Order of Lenin for assassinating Trotsky.

I have nothing at all against either a philosophically-informed atheism or a casual atheism that arises from a simple lack of religious temperament. There is little that annoys me as much as that smug atheism whose adherents refer to themselves as “freethinkers” or “brights.” I have met a lot of these people, and not one—not a single one—has ever had the slightest idea what he was talking about.

You see, white d00dz set up this thing called the patriarchy a long time ago. We all live under it. We actively try to tear it down, but that hasn’t happened yet. In the patriarchy, masculinity is seen as ideal. At the same time, we live in a racist society (also set up by white d00dz, btw). In this racist society, white is seen as the ideal. Now think about black males growing up. We’re simultaneously told that masculinity is the most important thing a person can have, but we’re also told we can never be quite as good as a white man. After all, many of us don’t even have fathers at home, and if we do, we mostly see them working menial jobs that come with little to no respect, almost none of that awesome masculinity the patriarchy is constantly telling them they need.
So, we develop this overly masculine culture to compensate for it. We can never compare to white men in the masculinity factor (which, again, the patriarchy is telling us is the most important thing ever) because we’re black (and, again, the racist society is telling us that white > black), so this overly masculine culture attacks anything the patriarchy tells us is less masculine than us: women, gays, trans* folks, non-athletic people, etc.
And then we make music. We make music about our culture, our culture which we want so badly to believe is our own, but has been shaped so much by the patriarchy and by racism. That music then reflects the negative things that have been ingrained in us by the systems white people set up, so imagine how I feel when white people act like misogyny in hip-hop is the cause of misogyny? No no no, white people, don’t blame black men for the misogyny that your men have been ingraining in us since the day we were born. Deal with your shit and we’ll deal with ours, but this shit started with you, not us. Many, many African cultures were matriarchies.

White privilege is knowing that even if you’re the minority in your school within the student body, the teachers, administration, and boards of education for your county and state are almost definitely dominated by people who look like you. The textbooks, curriculum, and standardized tests are all written by people who look like you. The psychological concepts on which education are based were conceptualized by people who look like you. The entire field of academia is dominated by the voice of people who look like you.
Trust me: just because there are more black kids than white kids at your school doesn’t mean you aren’t still in the majority.
